About HEAL
Introduced to San Mateo County coast side elementary students in January 2006, The HEAL Project is a home grown, hands on, CA academic standards science based curriculum and comprehensive set of programs. Developed with the support of a diverse group of community members, The HEAL Project expanded its programs within the Cabrillo Unified School District, and to date has delivered 3,245 hours of instruction & guided activities to over 3,200 students.
The HEAL Project's long term goal is to deliver its programs to all the schools in our district, including our Middle, High School, and Alternative High School.
Programs
- HEAL Class
One hour each week of lessons and activities that connect 2nd & 3rd grade children with their health, the planet and their community; class time is combined between the garden & the classroom in an accumulative 34 week experience.
- Noontime Sports
HEAL students are engaged in weekly sessions of organized games & sports during lunch recess, encouraging fitness and healthy lifestyle habits
- Garden Club
Weekly garden maintenance & skill building activities offered to 4th/5th grade students; members conduct campus garden sales, plan & participate in running Farmer’s Market sales booth, service learning, community projects and annual State Agricultural Certification.
- Summer School Garden Classes
Weekly garden classes offered at two age levels for 1st – 3rd grade and 4th – 7th grade students. Three hour sessions allows garden loving children time to indulge and take ownership of their own garden space, planning, planting, nuturing and building skills. Guided activities for older students emphasizes the “farm to market” process, growing, preparing, marketing & selling their organic produce within the community and at the Coastside Farmer’s Market.
